The Parasol Cooperative receives donation from the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation to combat DV

Updated: May 5, 2021

The Parasol Cooperative is excited to announce, receiving a generous donation from the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation for providing innovative services to assist the Domestic Violence survivor support organizations. Globally, during the pandemic reported cases of intimate partner violence or IPV have increased on average 25%. Nearly 50% of cases go unreported for various reasons, especially for the fear of getting caught and for language barriers. Both of which could be solved using technology. The team at The Parasol Cooperative is on a mission to create a global parasol of protection and accelerating the work of domestic violence organizations by providing technology tools, knowledge, and services. This will provide safe communications, knowledge sharing and reduce operational costs which could result in a multiplier effect of services being provided to victims of abuse.

CEO and Co-founder of The Parasol Cooperative, Megs Shah, uncovered a study by the World Health Organization on the prevalence of health effects due to intimate partner violence which can lead to cancer and other serious diseases. In addition, MD Anderson’s article about the issue of IPV being prevalent in cancer patients who are already in the fight for their life, can exasperate their condition and make it extremely difficult for treatments to work effectively. As a prior employee of Bristol Myers Squibb and someone who knew about the BMS Foundation, Ms. Shah understood that the Foundation’s focus on vulnerable populations aligned with The Parasol Cooperative’s vision to protect lives through technology.

When asked, why is this donation so important to you? Ms. Shah said “I am honored to have worked at BMS because they don’t just believe in their values, they live by them. This is also true for the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, as shown by this gesture of support. It confirms for the whole team at Parasol Cooperative that we are not in this alone. It is so refreshing to see one of the leading corporate foundations in the biopharmaceutical industry join the fight against cancer in a new way: through support for an organization that fights domestic violence in innovative ways, like ours. I am extremely grateful for their support and know that every penny they contributed will be put to good use to help us achieve our mission and vision.”

In addition to the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, The Parasol Cooperative is in discussions and actively fundraising from corporations and foundations. So, if your organization is interested in joining the fight against domestic violence and protecting life through technology, you can contact the team through their Contact Us Form, or to make an individual donation you can visit their fundraising page.
